Society Toastmasters Club

Society Toastmasters next meeting is on October 27th.  This is our new members night so this is a great night to come along and see what toastmasters is all about.  Guests are very welcome at any meeting. Just turn up by 7:10 on the night and a committee member will welcome you. Please note our new meeting start time of 7:15pm.  We meet at Chartered Accountants House, 47-49 Pearse St. Dublin 2 at 7:15pm every 2nd and 4th Thursday per month from September to May.  Our club is open to all. You don't have to be an accountant to join - about half our members come from the accountancy profession and half from other backgrounds.

Congratulations are due to Alan Tracey who won the Area Humourous speech competition last night.   In a very entertaining competition Alan shone through with a well delivered humourous speech.  Patrick Devaney also won the table topics competition which he was delighted with.  Both members received plenty of support on the night which was greatly appreciated.  The next outing for the pair is 2pm on 22nd October at Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords.

Now that we are conveniently located beside Pearse St. Dart Station why not come along and see what Toastmasters can do for your oral presentation and leadership skill set. Our annual membership subscription is €120.  When a new member joins the fee goes in part to cover membership of Toastmasters International and the purchase of a new member's manuals.

Did you see us in the Accountancy magazines?

Congratulations
on taking the first step to becoming a better speaker!
The second step is easy, come along as a guest (free of charge) to one of our meetings to experience our Toastmasters club for yourself.

In Society Toastmasters we have approx. 25 to 30 members who vary in age and in experience. Society Toastmasters for meis a hidden gem of a club.  It offers a a supportive environment for those that want to make their first tentative steps to improving their communication or leadership skills.  It is very enjoyable going from a situation where you are nervous speaking in front of others to actually looking forward to the opportunity.  The meetings themselves are always interesting and fun and I am delighted I decided to come along to a meeting out of initial curiosity.

Being able to speak well and with confidence in public is such a practical skill

Furthermore, it is always great to see new members making progress - whatever their starting point or initial skill level. Society Toastmasters has a number of long-standing advanced speakers that are always available to mentor new members and impart their valuable advice on how to become a competent speaker - or on how to become an advanced speaker to those that already carry a high skill level upon entering the club.

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped millions of men and women become more confident in front of an audience. Our network of clubs and their learn-by-doing program are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader. Why pay thousands of euro for a seminar when you can join a Toastmasters club for a fraction of the cost and have fun in the process?

Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation. Whether you are a professional, student, stay-at-home parent or retiree, Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. By learning to effectively formulate and express your ideas, you open an entirely new world of possibilities. You’ll be more persuasive and confident when giving presentations, and you’ll improve your one-on-one dealings with others.

Don’t worry! Everyone in a Toastmasters club was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. And you’ll love the applause! Constructive evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Each time you give a prepared speech, an evaluator will point out strengths and suggest improvements. At first you’ll be applauded for your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill.

You won’t regret it. Toastmasters currently has more than 200,000 members in 80 countries. Our club is just one of the more than 10,000 clubs located around the world. For membership meeting information, please see our membership information page.

More About Toastmasters...

How our club works
Membership is open to all so please come and observe us at first hand as a guest as many times as you like before deciding whether to join the club or not.

The following items describe some aspects of our club and how we do our business:

What happens at our club meetings

Before the meeting starts
We start promptly at 7:00pm on the second and fourth Thursday of every month between September and May of each year.

Before the meeting proper starts, club members chat informally and meet and greet other members, new members and guests.

Opening
At 7:00pm, the President calls the meeting to order. He will open the meeting with some topical comments and introduce the Toastmaster for the evening.

The Toastmaster will take the gavel from the President and chair the meeting for the remainder of the night, introducing the speakers and participants as required.

Prepared speeches
In the early part of the meeting, members (who had previously agreed to be on the programme) will be invited by the Toastmaster to deliver their prepared speech. Speeches are typically of 5-7 minutes duration and a meeting will usually consist of 3-4 prepared speeches.

Speeches are typically written to fulfill objectives of a Toastmaster manual and each members decides what their own speech will be about.

These speeches are then evaluated later in the meeting.

Break
At about 8.00 or 8:10 those in attendance will go for a 10/15 minute tea/coffee break.

After the break, the Toastmaster will call the meeting to order again and introduce the Topics Master.

Topics
The Topics Master is delegated to compose a list of topics (before the meeting) and ask members to stand and respond extemporaneously/off-the-cuff to the topic that has been given to them.

Guests are never asked to partake in this section and members may opt out until they wish to partake - but it is usually more fun and a great challenge to have a go!

The topics section provides a real opportunity for members to learn to 'think and respond on their feet'. Members will speak for a minute or so on a topic.

After the topics session has ended, the Toastmaster will introduce the General Evaluator (GE).

Evaluations
The GE is delegated to evaluate all that has happened throughout the evening and express his/her comments on what has been done well and on what might be improved.

The GE invites evaluators to come forward and present a 2-3 minute evaluation of a speech that had been delivered earlier in the night. There will be a separate evaluator for each speech. A typical evaluation will offer constructive evaluation and supportive comments about the speech that a member delivers.

The GE concludes his/her evaluation and hands control of the gavel back to the Toastmaster.

Closing
The Toastmaster offers his/her closing comments and passes the gavel back to the President.

At 8:55 PM the President closes the meeting. Typically, members go to a nearby hotel/pub for a drink and a chat.

The wider Toastmasters organisation

Each Toastmasters club relates to other clubs in its ‘Area’. Each ‘Area’ exists within a ‘Division’. Each ‘Division’ is affiliated to a ‘District’ (Ireland & GB) and all the Districts together make up the Toastmasters organisation throughout the world.

Every Autumn the club holds a club ‘Humourous Speech Contest’ and a ‘Topics’ contest.

Every Spring it holds a ‘Speech Contest’ and an ‘Evaluation Contest’.

The winners of these contests advance to represent the club at ‘Area’ level and perhaps subsequently at ‘Division’ and ‘District’ levels before the ultimate stage – the Toastmasters International contests that are held in the United States each year. It is essentially a world championship of public speaking.
